Since its launch, CD Projekt RED has had issues over the state of Cyberpunk 2077‘s state at launch from public backlash, law-suites, and media hail storms over the games launch, review process, and patches, to a public apology that wasn’t received well and a vague road map, to say the least.
Well, now things have gotten a lot worse as the developer has publicly announced that they have indeed been hacked and the source code for Cyberpunk, The Witcher 3, and Gwent, have been stolen and a ransom note has been left in their place.
CD Projekt RED posted over on their official Twitter account an important update.
When it rains it pours for CDPR the breach didn’t just result in the loss of source code but a breach of investor relations, accounting, administration, and more.
A breach of this nature spells disaster for the publisher, with personal information and the source code to their projects in the hands of an unknown hacker, if CDPR does not cooperate within 48 hours, this information could be sold on the black market.

How this will affect Cyberpunk’s updates and the roadmap, in general, is yet to be seen. Conspiracy theories have started on social media from fans as many voicing that CDPR may have faked the hack to gain more time for implementing fixes.
However, CDPR would stand to lose more than they would gain if this were the case as investors and stock price would plummet and consumer trust would quickly vanish given the recent backlash and mountain of problems the company has faced.
The company gave themselves a sterling reputation with the release of The Witcher 3 but with exposure in regards to crunch and treatment of their teams, to the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 that reputation is all but tarnished beyond repair, The attack would seem to be another response to the way the developer operates, with extreme crunch time and the state of Cyberpunk’s launch, maybe now the company will think about how they operate and how hard they work for their team.
We hope that CD Projekt RED can navigate through this never-ending onslaught and get the opportunity to focus on fixing the title, this hack won’t only affect the company but the employees that work for the developer, only time will tell where this leaves the company when it all blows over, If plans remain the same and if the company still plans to release a multiplayer stand-alone title or if DLC is still on track.
