With PlayStation 5 being in the wild for almost two months now gamers have been able to put the console through its paces and review everything from the controller and other peripherals, almost all of the reviews are positive but all touch on the same drawback over its competition the Xbox Series X/S over the storage capacity
Both versions of the PS5 come with 825GB of storage, but only 667GB of it can be used due to system files. You can connect an external hard drive to your PS5, but only PS4 games can be moved onto it. PS5-compatible external hard drives will be available at some point in the future.
During Sony’s deep dive into the system’s hardware, however, Sony’s Mark Cerny went into detail on the compression that would be used, Sony we’re going to stick with ZLIB that was used on the PS4 but during a tour of Development studios in 2017 decided to switch to a new format KRAKEN from Rad Game Tools, the KRAKEN format gives the PS5’s SSD ten percent greater compression when it comes to storing information.
Of course, for a lot of gamers, this was a lot of technical jargon that went over our heads, but now the famed SSD has flexed its muscles, with the release of Control Ultimate Edition on PS5 and Series X, the file size on PS5 is forty-two percent smaller than on Xbox, this is a huge difference due to the KRAKEN compression methods, this aspect of the SSD had to be seen.
This would mean that if the compression remains consistent then the 825GB could equate to more than the Series X if every multi-platform title is 40-50 percent smaller on PS5.
As great as this is Sony still lacks expandable storage for its new console, during the same deep dive, consumers were advised that third-party expandable storage would be available after launch, there has still yet to be an announcement on which third-party expansions are compatible if any, but now, owners know their SSD is capable of storing a lot more than they thought.
PlayStation 5 stock is still low and there is no indication of when more will be available for those still waiting for an upgrade outside of scalping groups, all we can do is wait for an update on the situation to keep you informed and try to stay ahead of the scalpers when more units are available.
